Wallachian Bell and Belfry

Wallachian Bell and Belfry

The Wallachian Bell and Belfry is a meaningful memorial honoring Czech Texans who served in World War II. The bell was cast by master bell maker Josef Tkadlec in Halenkov, Czech Republic, and hangs in a belfry constructed in the traditional Wallachian (Valassko) style typical of northeastern Moravia. This style is symbolic of earlier days before newspapers and radio, when the bell was used to call people together for births, deaths, and religious services, especially in villages without a church.

The bell and belfry bear the Czech inscription, “Co srdce spoji, more nerozdvoji” (“What the heart joins, the sea cannot divide”), reflecting a message of love and unity between the Czech lands and the Czech community in Texas. The belfry was dedicated on November 10, 1996, in memory of Victor Alfons Peter, a Czech Heritage Society trustee instrumental in fostering friendship between Texas and the Czech Republic.

The construction and assembly involved many dedicated volunteers from the Czech community, including members of the Czech Heritage Society and local parishioners. The belfry serves as a lasting symbol of remembrance, cultural heritage, and the enduring bond between Czech Texans and their ancestral homeland.
