Mary Magdalene Chapel

Mary Magdalene Chapel

The Mary Magdalene Chapel is a meticulously crafted replica of the village chapel of Mniší, Czech Republic, built to honor the spiritual traditions and faith of Czech immigrants who settled in Texas. The original chapel in Mniší dates back to the late 13th century, founded by Cistercian monks, and served as a central place of worship for the community. Many Texas Czech families, including the Kolibas, Haidušeks, and Jurenas, trace their ancestry to this village.

Constructed in 2023 by Weaver & Jacobs Construction Company of Cuero, Texas, the chapel features altars handcrafted by renowned Czech artisans George Kalisek and Ernest Chalouka Jr. These altars faithfully replicate the early 1900s Czech land altars, showcasing intricate woodwork and traditional designs that embody the deep faith and artistic heritage of the Czech people. The chapel serves as both a sacred place of worship and a cultural monument, preserving the spiritual legacy of Czech Texans.

The dedication ceremony included prayers led by Rev. Stephen Nesrsta, traditional Czech delicacies, and live Czech music, underscoring the chapel’s role as a living testament to the community’s enduring faith. Open to the public during special events such as Mayfest/Slavnost, the chapel invites members to connect intimately with their ancestors’ spiritual journey.
