Kosmas

Did you know that Kosmas, the pre-eminent academic journal in English that focuses on Czech and Slovak studies is not published in Texas? Kosmas moved to Texas A & M University in 2000 and is edited by Clinton Machann, with David Z. Chroust as managing editor. As an international, interdiciplinary journal sponsored by the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences (SVU), Kosmos publishes articles and features on a variety of topics: for example, the Spring 2003 issue contains articles on the Czech novelist Milan Kundra, the Czech poet Ivan Blatny, the history of Czech Catholicism, programs in occupational psychology in heavy industry in Ostrava, the legacy of T.G. Masaryk, early predictions of the breakup of Czechoslovakia, the Czech journalist Josef Josten, the last days of President Havel, and the assimilation among Czech-Moravians in Texas.

The "Czech-Moravian" article, by Kevin Hannan, is one of several recent articles of special interest to readers from Texas. Other examples: "Texas Czech: A Study in Language Death" by C.S. "Woody" Smith and "The Future of Czech in Texas: "How Can You Learn Something If It's Not Offered To You?" by Lida Dutkova-Cope (Spring 2001), "The Years of Svoboda in the Texas Czech Community 1880s-WWI" by Eva Eckert (Fall 2002).

Kosmas is published twice a year, in the Spring and Fall. An individual one-year subscription is $27.00 ($22.00 for current memebers of SVU - The Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences - $30.00 for libraries and otgher institutions).
